The Krasnals

The Krasnals – polska grupa artystyczna powstała w marcu 2008.

W listopadzie 2009 grupa została nominowana do Paszportów Polityki.

W grudniu 2009 roku w Skwerze (Filii Centrum Artystycznego Fabryka Trzeciny) w Warszawie prezentowana była pierwsza w Polsce wystawa The Krasnals. Około 20 wystawianych na niej prac komentowało bieżące wydarzenia, takie jak wybór Baracka Obamy na prezydenta, śmierć Michaela Jacksona czy koncert Madonny w Polsce[3].

The Krasnals

The Krasnals – Polish artistic group was founded in March 2008. Its members remain anonymous. They work mainly through his blog . Their actions, based on provocation, are a reaction to current social-political situation and cause extreme judgments.

In his works include paintings refer to Wilhelm Sasnal , that is to them a symbolic turning point, a symbolic peak, crossing the barrier to the formation of which came in charge of the art market in Poland [1] . Criticized the Polish and world art market, which is formed by a group of few people, and its success can only relate this artist who is responsible kreowanym their trends and who has the appropriate knowledge. They believe that only thanks to the internet on the Polish art market appears to democracy [1] .

Because of the similarity to the works of Sasnal the spring of 2008 the painting Untitled (Group of Monkeys with White Bananas) , signedWhielki Dwarf , was valued by the auction house Christie’s on 70 000 pounds. When the mistake was noted, the valuation has been canceled. In October 2009, Peter Uklański used his portrait, made by The Krasnals, as part of the system exposed in the Tate Modern [2] .

In November 2009 the group was nominated for Passports policy .

In December 2009, in the Square (Branch Factory Art Center Trzeciny ) was presented in Warsaw, Poland’s first exhibition of The Krasnals.Approximately 20 works exhibited commented on it current events, such as the selection of Barack Obama for president, the death ofMichael Jackson or a concert of Madonna in Poland [3] .

Group sex with Angela Merkel

The German town of Bodman-Ludwigshafen in the far south of Germany isn’t exactly a hot tourist attraction. But lately it has been a magnet for tourists armed with cameras and camcorders. The sudden fame is due to a controversial tryptich at the center of town – a work by the German sculpture, Peter Lenk. The sculpture is called « group-sex relief » and features prominent politicians and corporate players in various states of undress and completely nude. One panel stars German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder laughing and grabbing each others private parts. In a ‘Wprost’ weekly (on 21 of Sept) they ask; where are the boundaries of satire and the freedom of the artistic statement?
‘There are no boundaries – German politics said unanimously.’
Meanwhile, not so far from Germany, polish art critics are indignant with The Krasnals drawings.
What a difference just a border makes…

Painting of Whielki Krasnal at the charity auction in Cracow

Whielki Krasnal « 300 miles to Heaven ». 2008. Oil on canvas. 100 x 150Just on Saturday there will be the auction ‘Wielkie Serce’ (Big Heart), where the painting of Whielki Krasnal ‘300 miles to Heaven’ will be offered.
It is exhibited already at the Manggha Museum in Cracow. For the first time in Poland the painting created by The Krasnals will be shown for the public. The auction will take place on 22nd of November at 5pm
THE « MANGGHA » CENTRE OF JAPANESE ART AND TECHNOLOGY in Cracow, Poland

led by Andrzej Starmach
Guest of the evening – the actress Anna DymnaWe declare, that the charity activity for children will be the permanent one led by The Krasnals. As the ‘Krasnals’ – gnomes – we naturally take care about the children.
Paintings destined for the auctions will concern the subject connected with children.

‘300 miles to Heaven’ comes from the Polish movie which is the shocking story of two boys living in communistic reality before 1989. The story is based on facts. Brothers decide to run away from Poland to Sweden, to better world. They hide below the track.
This is the picture of great desire, but the price is high – they became separated from their parents.
At the other hand this is the symbol of real revolution, risk, taken by children.More info about the auction:

The Krasnals confuse Polish art market – the record on the charity auction!

Despite the big concurrence at the charity auction ‘Wielkie Serce’ on 22nd of November, which offered established names like Magdalena Abakanowicz, Edward Dwurnik, Jerzy Nowosielski, Marcin Maciejowski, Jadwiga Sawicka; the most expensively sold painting was created by Whielki Krasnal “300 miles to Heaven », it was bid on 31 000 PLN (about 7800 EUR).Polish art world still can’t believe that fresh debutants (we run our activity from April 2008) with no exhibition in their CV, could gain such a success and become so present in peoples art consciousness, although all the critics tried not make any noise about them.‘Who is the artist hidden by the name ‘Whielki Krasnal’’ – asked the participants of the auction. Some of them suspected it could be Wilhelm Sasnal, but organizers didn’t confirm that. The hot controversy is fresh on the main Polish art blogs:The art critic Jakub Banasiak quickly writes the article where he tries to prove that The Krasnals are no valuable artists using only vulgarism and invectives:

Welcome to the Paradise

UNFCCC
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate ChangeThe United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 14)
1-12 December 2008 , Poznań, PolandThe Governor of California – Arnold Schwarzenegger – is the kind of real hero, prince present at the conference in Poznan. The event is like the fairy tale for this not so known city and Arnold is its hope and the main symbol. Apart the ecology problems this is a wonderful chance for promotion of Poznan.

Krasnal Bansky „Welcome to the Paradise / Arnold Schwarzenegger / The United Nations Climate Change Conference 2008 / from the series Great Poles”. 2008. Akcrylic on canvas. 60 x 90 cmWe don’t know if there will be some crucial results after this summit, but we appeal the fight for economy development and protection of own interests not dominate over the main aim which is the protection of our planet!Laureates of Nobel Peace Prize present at the conference are the world’s peace symbols – peace that can be easily disturbed by climate changes. Water shortages, disappearing of lands under the water, limiting the surface of cultivation land, potential conflict arising from the Arctic thawing which will see countries having an interest making territorial claims – all these aspects profoundly impact international security and can provoke humanitarian disasters or wars.“The most appropriate way of viewing climate change is as a threat multiplier: it aggravates the stresses and strains within and between countries. Climate change threatens to overburden those countries and regions that are already fragile and conflict-prone. The critical variable is governance. How governments will respond to the impacts of climate change depends on how well they resolve conflicts today. “Javier SolanaJust to continue this thought, Beijing has postponed a European Union-China summit following the European leaders’ contacts with the Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama. China is against meeting Nicolas Sarkozy with Dalai Lama on 6th December in Gdansk in Poland, on the occasion of 25th anniversary of awarding the Peace Nobel Prize for Lech Wałęsa.

What rules will oblige after 2012? Will the emissions be reduces by 50% by 2050?

Sensitive to contemporary signs of the legacy of communism as well as to the phenomenon of corporationism in art and the art system, The Krasnals’ work can be considered a continuation of critical art, which in 1990s focused on the exposing the mechanisms of consumer society. We recycle works of other artists, curators and critics.

The Krasnals War with Facebook Censorship

The Krasnals. Big Dwarf « Facebook – Censorship ». 2011. Oil on cardboard. 50 x 70 cmThe act of censorship, removing The Krasnals facebook account is one of the biggest crimes against free culture, democracy, freedom of artistic speech in Poland since the last decade !For a couple of days, when trying to access th account, we get the message « your account is disabled. It is damaged ». After sending a series of e-mails to disabled@facebook.com, we got the reply, that we may make a group, but after registering as a real person. Without any warning, our two-year work of art has been destroyed, the data archive (photos, texts and comments were a very import_ant social voice. Is this a new form of burning inconvenient books?) and a wide amount of friends, gathered contacts, that we cannot get back. If we received some information a few days beforehand, we could have informed our friends and save the most import_ant information.Facebook proves once again, that democracy and its main element- freedom of speech is fictional. Facebookis a syndrome of our times and a modern way of censoring. The official freedom of speech is controlled from every corner and denied to us undercover of precise terms and regulations of use. To this accusation Facebook always responds negatively.
So it requires to give out real personal data, which is impossible in the case of an anonymous artist using a pseudonym. This is the first proof allowing to get removed from facebook. But what’s more important– your profile gets blocked when a certain number of people reports abuse. What does it mean?
It suffices, when some people are against critical comments, and boom- the profile disappears from public space. The accounts do not disappear according to some rules, but after reporting abuse. So first, someone has to report this and then someone has to verify this, or at least they should. Human malevolence knows no boundaries, in case some group doesn’t like someone for some reason, they can easily block the account. This way we have absurdities, like freedom of speech have only those politically correct consumers of goods produced by modern corporations.
We opt for no political party, the only thing we are sensitive to is social deformation, no matter what the political source. We try to provoke discussion about some sick phenomena, especially in culture.
In our case it is a n embarrassing form of censorship, because it is known that our activity is not pleasant to everyone and is mainly executed over the internet.
Our main tool of functioning is being taken away from us.
